Things to do in Blouberg: your personal checklist

Category Area Info

Craving some epic sunsets, toes-in-the-sand relaxation, and maybe a touch of adventure? Then pack your swimsuit (and maybe a windbreaker - it can get breezy!), because Blouberg is calling your name. Marlene Snowdon, Principal Property Practitioner at Century 21 Western Seaboard, says this popular coastal town has plenty of things to do for everyone in the family. She shares some of her top picks for after-work relaxation, weekend outings, or holiday fun in the sun.

1. Catch some rays and waves: Blouberg is known for its beautiful beaches like Big Bay and Little Bay, which are perfect for open water swimming, sunbathing, surfing, and kitesurfing. These areas also have a variety of trendy restaurants, cafes, and bars, making them great places to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

2. Explore hidden beach coves: While Bloubergstrand and Big Bay are popular for a reason, Blouberg boasts several smaller, more secluded coves that offer a different experience. Sheltered by granite boulders, Little Bay provides a tranquil escape for swimming, sunbathing, or picnicking with a backdrop of stunning natural beauty.

3. Take a watersport lesson: The area's beautiful beaches attract top watersport talent, so you'll find plenty of academies and schools to learn how to swim, surf, and kitesurf like a pro.

4. Snap some epic photos: Blouberg boasts spectacular views of Table Mountain, Robben Island, and the Atlantic Ocean. These are truly one-of-a-kind and provide an exceptional backdrop for events and photo opportunities.

5. Treat your taste buds: After a day at the beach, explore Blouberg's diverse culinary offerings, including Ons Huisie Restaurant, Blowfish Restaurant, Doodles Beachfront, and Jerry's Burger Bar. From casual beachfront cafes to fine-dining restaurants with breathtaking views, there's something to satisfy every palate. Be sure to try some of the fresh local seafood!

6. Lace up your hiking boots: Blouberg offers several scenic hiking trails, perfect if you want to immerse yourself in nature. The most popular one is the Blouberg Coastal Hiking Trail, which offers unobstructed views of Table Mountain and the Blaauwberg Nature Reserve.

7. Shop until you drop: Whether you're after daily essentials or need a dose of retail therapy, Blouberg has several well-stocked shopping centres. These include Bayside Mall, Eden on the Bay, Seaside Village Shopping Centre, and Tableview Shopping Centre.

8. Recharge and rejuvenate: After a day of exploring, treat yourself to a relaxing spa treatment. Blouberg has several spas offering a variety of treatments, from massages to facials. Head to Isla Malie Tropical Massage Spa, Rejuva Spa, or Ohana Beauty & Wellness to start your pampering.

9. Have some food for the soul: Blouberg's vibrant art scene is a must-visit and includes renowned Studio 46, a stunning showcase of fine art, jewellery, and handcrafted items.

10. Climb to the top of a lighthouse: Take a step back in time and explore the Milnerton Lighthouse, which was built in 1899. Climb the 135 steps to the top for breathtaking panoramic views of Table Mountain, Robben Island, and the Blouberg coastline.

11. Enjoy a farm-fresh affair: Every Saturday morning, the Blaauwberg Farmer's Market comes alive with fresh produce, artisanal foods, and unique crafts. It's a great way to support local businesses and discover the hidden gems of Blouberg's culinary scene.

12. Unwind after the sun sets: When the sun sets, Blouberg's nightlife springs into action and includes listening to live music, sipping cocktails, watching the game, or dancing the night away. Must-visit spots include The Thursty Turtle, The Royal Oak Pub, Boardhouse, and Pakalolo Table View Beach Bar.

13. Meet some feathered friends: SANCCOB, a registered seabird non-profit, gives informative tours where you can learn about these amazing creatures, entertain visiting loved ones, or get more information if you're interested in a career in conservation.

14. Get active with the locals: This Big Bay parkrun is a five-km community event that takes place every Saturday morning at Eden on the Bay, Big Bay. Walk, jog, run, volunteer, or spectate - it's your choice.

15. Head into the wild: The Rietvlei Wetland Reserve is a 663-hectare nature reserve situated in Table View. With over 180 different bird species, including ducks, flamingos and pelicans, and two bird hides, it is a lovely spot for birdwatching.

16. Rock out to the beat: The Blouberg Ultimate Shutdown is a two-day music festival held in December. It brings together local and international artists, DJs, and performers for a vibrant celebration of music and dance. It's a fantastic opportunity to soak up the festive atmosphere and enjoy the stunning Blouberg scenery.

17. See the skies come alive: Held on Bloubergstrand Beach, the Red Bull King of the Air is a premier big air kiteboarding competition featuring the best athletes from around the World. Riders are judged based on the height of their jumps, the variety of their tricks, and their style.
