Exploring Blouberg's open water swimming scene with Ryan Stramrood

Category General News

Open water swimming gets you out into the fresh air and sunshine for an invigorating dip in open waters. The sport has become popular in Blouberg and surrounding areas - with such gorgeous beaches it's hardly a surprise.

To find out more, Century 21 spoke to Ryan Stramrood, a Cape Town-born swimmer making a splash on the scene. Ryan is well known for completing a staggering 114 crossings between Robben Island and Blouberg beach. His drive recently saw him pick up a nomination for Man of the Year of the World Open Water Swimming Association (WOWSA).

Ryan, congratulations on your nomination. How do you feel about the achievement?

It is wonderful recognition from my peers around the world. The WOWSA, which runs the awards globally, is a highly respected organisation in open water swimming circles. I am extremely flattered. I'm honoured to stand amongst the fellow nominees and proud.

Open water swimming is your passion. What do you love about it?

It can be extremely hard. It combines the extreme physical with extreme psychological; add extreme solitude and then throw in the element cold to which our bodies and minds react profoundly. I guess this all combines to challenge me in a way that keeps me learning new things about myself after each and every swim.

Open water swimming is fast becoming a popular sport in Cape Town. Why do you think this is?

The simple answer is three fold - 1) the Cape's incredible swimming venues; 2) an organisation known as Big Bay Events which is helping hundreds with safe access to our waters; and 3) the Cape Long Distance Swimming Association (CLDSA) and its open water swimming community continually embracing, educating, encouraging, and assisting new swimmers to get into the waters on their doorstep.

Ryan, what advice would you give to someone new to the sport?

There are so many, including myself, who are willing to help and guide new swimmers. Look us up and join the regular, informal, free, and fun swim groups which run on either side of the bay - all have their own WhatsApp groups, just join one. Don't ever feel you are not good enough, fast enough, brave enough - there is always someone at your level to swim alongside and no one will make you do what you don't want to.

That said, be honest about your ability, both swimming and cold tolerance, before heading out into the ocean and, if need be, work your way up. Fitness and ability are usually gained in the safety of a swimming pool before entering the sea.

What routes would you recommend in and around Blouberg?

There are so many and Derrick Frazer's Big Bay Events are the masters at plotting the right course for you. That said, by far the most popular, most exciting, and most difficult is the swim between Robben Island and Blouberg beach. Set this as your goal and work your way up by regular swims in the bay and pool training. You'll never look back.

What kind of swimming conditions can one expect?

One can always expect cold water. That's the real challenge of the waters in and around Blouberg. But, of course, you'll get everything else too - from currents to wind to wildlife. It is the real deal out there, but if respected and supported, it is very safe and extremely rewarding. Never swim alone.

What kind of gear or equipment is best to use, especially for Blouberg's unique environment?

If you want CLDSA recognition for an official Robben Island crossing, then your attire is limited to a Speedo-type costume, one neoprene cap, and goggles. No wetsuit, flippers, or paddles. It's a purist sport and I encourage all to set such a crossing as their goal.

However, if you are just looking to get into the water for fun and fitness, then you can add a wetsuit to buffer against Blouberg's cold water and any other comfort and aid you choose. Swimming is one of the most accessible sports financially -you don't need an expensive bike or running shoes to enjoy it.

You were born in Cape Town and spend a lot of time in Blouberg. What do you love about Blouberg?

I do spend a lot of time in Blouberg, mostly in the water. Blouberg offers wonderful, safe access to Table Bay's clean water and many brilliant venues for that after-swim lunch!

What can we expect from Ryan Stramrood in the future?

I am currently in heavy training for a big local swim which will see me tackle a 36-km course as soon as the weather elements, currents, wildlife, and daylight hours align.

Century 21 wishes Ryan and other open water swimmers well as they take on our exceptional seascapes. As your local property professionals, we are proud to be part of Blouberg.
