Melkbosstrand at a glance

Melkbosstrand is widely considered to be one of the towns which connect Cape Town to the desolate yet undeniably beautiful West Coast of the Western Cape of South Africa. The town is dominated by a love for surf, sand, and nature and its name is derived from the Afrikaans word Melkbos, which translates to milk bush and strand which translates to beach. Hence if directly translated from Afrikaans to English it reads as Milk Bush Beach. A huge deciding factor for people wishing to move to Melkbosstrand is that one enjoys the best of both worlds. A brief history of the area

Just like much of the mother city or towns near its epicentre, Melkbosstrand has had a huge role to play in the history of the area. The town was originally called Losperd’s Bay which stems from an older dialect of Dutch, the main language for which Afrikaans is derived, it means The Bay of Lost Horses. It was also the battleground for the highly remembered Battle of Blaauwberg which is an event that resulted in this particular geographical location becoming a colony of British rule. Its treacherous oceans have also set the ghastly scene for various shipwrecks which are believed to be the remnants of ships from Portuguese explorers. However, these are only recent historical events and archaeologists have found research that has led them to believe that the region has a direct link to the Khoi-San people of Southern Africa.
