Benoni has a colourful community and it's best seen in Crazy Monkey: Straight Outta Benoni, an MTV-inspired movie. Set in the area, the well-received film was a huge box office success.

You know that Charlize Theron and Princess Charlene of Monaco lived in Benoni. But, did you know it's also linked to rugby player, Bryan Habana, comedian, Barry Hilton, and artist, Mongezi Ncaphayi. Could the area make you the next star?

With its many industries, you'll find Benoni a place of opportunity. In 2014, the first Hyundai assembly plant was launched in the town. It helped create many jobs for locals.

Almost a decade ago, Marthys "Thys" and Nic Korsman relocated to Benoni from the Netherlands. They started an ice cream factory which delivered these dairy desserts by horse-drawn carts. You can still pop in for a cone.

Benoni's Bunny Park is a fun spot to see these furry creatures. Since 2017, over 18 million rands has been put in to upgrade and beautify it. The park officially reopens on 11 December 2019.

9. Lake City

Benoni covers two sides of a valley that borders four lakes. As such, the town is fondly referred to as the "City of Lakes" by residents. By moving to the area, you'll get to enjoy the scenic beauty and recreational pursuits of these waterbodies.

10. Grave times

If you're a history buff, you'll want to visit the Rynsoord Cemetery. This burial site has some notable graves related to the 1913 Mineworkers Strike, 1918 Spanish Influenza pandemic, the 1922 Rand Rebellion and the Crimean War.

11. Retail therapy

You can shop until you drop. Benoni's Northmead Mall was revamped in 2014. Boasting 40 fantastic stores, it offers a convenient stop for locals in search of quality goods and services.

12. Holiday spirit

In 1953, the municipal Christmas lighting scheme came into operation and the Christmas procession was staged. Benoni was transformed into a fairyland. Over 20 000 people across East Rand came to see the lights. The lighting tradition lives on today.

13. Caribbean flavour

Benoni has one of the best Jamaican-themed restaurants in the country. Head to Cool Runnings for delicious food, fun events and cheerful service.

14. Busy bee

Fact: There's never a dull day in Benoni. There's just too much to do. You can explore the Benoni Art Route, do a round of golf at the Benoni Country Club or go animal-spotting at the Benoni Monkey And Bird Park.

15. Class act

Benoni has a number of schools with fine teachers. One of these is Willowmoore High School. The principal and deputy principal were recognised this year at the 20th National Teaching Awards (NTA) for excellence in education.
