Braamfontein at a glance

Braamfontein is a popular and centrally located commercial and residential node or precinct situated in the heart of the city of gold - Johannesburg. It's within close proximity to other locations of a similar nature including Newtown. Some of the attractions or facilities nearby include The Nelson Mandela Bridge and Park Station. The latter being one of the countries transportation hubs. The suburb is also regarded for being the location for some of South Africa's most prestigious corporations including Liberty Holdings Limited and Sappi.

Braamfontein is also situated just a few minutes walk from the Constitutional Court of South Africa. It's also the location where the offices of the Johannesburg City Council and the University of the Witwatersrand are located. A brief history of the area

Just like many of the towns or suburbs around Johannesburg, Braamfontein was first established as a farming area around the year 1853. Since that day the area has grown exponentially due to varying factors. On the 19th of February 1896, tragedy struck the region when a freight train transporting some 56 tonnes of dynamite exploded leaving just under 80 people dead. It's stated that the area came to commercial fruition during the 1980s. However, after this period, the entire central areas of Johannesburg became casualties to the effects of urban decay. That said a lot of initiatives have been implemented by the city of Johannesburg, various big businesses operating out of the region and the Braamfontein Management District, to turn the location around. Today its one of the cities most talked of and visited areas.

Infrastructure

The entire Braamfontein area is well connected in terms of public transport. Its closely located to one of the countries biggest transportation hubs, Park Station. At this facility, one can utilize various transportation methods including bus or train and it's also the base for both the Gautrain service and Metrorail. Braamfontein as a whole has well-maintained roads, some of which include, Juta Street, Station Street, Smit Street, Wolmarans Street, Rissik Street, Sutherland Avenue, the M9, Lillian Ngoyi Street, Rahina Mossa Street and Albertina Sisulu Road.

It's also only 2km away from the central business district of the city. The highly regarded OR Tambo International Airport is located within close proximity to Braamfontein and is just under 30 km away and will take roughly 40 minutes to get there from Braamfontein, depending on traffic.
