A brief history of the area

According to various historical records, 1877 was the year in which European settlers first made their way to what is today known as Gonubie. However, if one wishes to delve a little deeper, anthropological studies have concluded that the region was largely inhabited by the Xhosa and Khoi people before the arrival of Europeans. There is contention whether the original name Gqunube is from the Khoi or Xhosa languages as the word Gonubie is a bastardization from the original name in order to suite a Eurocentric linguistic palate. Later findings have led many to believe that the original name Gqunube is, in fact, a Khoi word and it directly relates to the brambleberry bushes found in abundance in this part of South Africa. Another theory is that the name is in direct relation to another variety of bush called Royena, which is popular for its unique yellow flowers.
