However, in the midseason during January and February, when there could be a sufficient supply, a cactus pear can sell for R4 or between R26 000 and R40 000 a ton.
Prickly pear fruit is stocked by the major retail chains such as Pick n Pay, Woolworths, Shoprite, and Food Lover’s Market as well as by local fruit shops, greengrocers, and farmers’ markets. Currently the seller supply to some of these outlets.
The fruit is also used extensively in other food products, like juice, jam, jelly, and chutney; and the cladodes can be pickled and eaten in salads. Cactus pear fruit can even be made into beer, wine or liqueur.
