Nelspruit's history
From an outpost town to a provincial city, Nelspruit has evolved over the years. This progress is a point of pride. The area was founded in 1895 by the Nel brothers who grazed their cattle around the site during the winter months. The area became a town when the Republican Volksraad approved plans to build a railway from the newly discovered Lowveld goldfields to Johannesburg.
Today, Nelspruit is a vibrant city. It was renamed Mbombela in 2009, a Siswati word for "a lot of people together in a small space". A Nelspruit milestone was being a host city for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Nelspruit's attractions
Another feather in Nelspruit's cap is its prime location. The area provides easy access to many popular attractions. The Lowveld National Botanical Garden offers an exciting peek into South Africa's fauna and flora. On Mandela Day, local Healing Wings kitchen produced 1 200 litres of soup for 4800 people in a nationwide effort. In another instance, a post office employee drove three hours out of Nelspruit (in his own time) to hand-deliver a parcel to a woman. Nelspruit's generosity is even reflected through Uber Eats. The city takes the top spot on the app using "please" and "thank you" on any special order requests.
Nelspruit's culinary scene
With its subtropical climate and fertile land, Mpumalanga is known for growing delicious citrus and tropical fruits and nuts. The availability of fresh produce and local ingenuity have made Nelspruit a great place for epicures.
