It's official: Cape Town is your work-from-home capital

Category Area Info

With COVID-19, many companies are switching to remote working across the world. If you're one of the fortunate ones, you can now work from anywhere. And if you're still office-bound, there's hope yet. Remote working is the future, and it's on its way fast. The big question, though: where do you choose to work? The quick answer: Cape Town. The Mother City has built a reputation as the place every digital nomad wants to call home.

Cape Town scores remote working accolades

Big 7 Travel, a popular travel resource, has named Cape Town one of the best cities to work from remotely in 2021. Coming at number 42 on the list of 50, Big 7 Travel highlighted Cape Town's connected ex-pat and digital nomad scene, beautiful scenery, colourful markets, and quirky neighbourhoods.

A study by Resume.io also finds that Cape Town is the digital nomad capital of Africa. The online resume maker analyzed 90,000 Instagram posts tagged #digitalnomad to find out where freelancers recommend the most. Cape Town topped the list of African countries. According to Resume.io, "the city is well furnished with cafés and co-working spaces with fast Wi-Fi - and you're always a short trek away from a natural adventure like no other."

Cape Town launches Digital Nomad initiative

The City of Cape Town has recognised the massive potential of remote working for the city's tourism market. In response, they recently launched the Digital Nomad initiative which aims to attract remote workers from South Africa and abroad. This development is ensuring the word gets out to local and international remote workers that the metro is open for business. As part of the initiative, the City is also lobbying the South African government to introduce a 'Remote Working Visa'.
