Centurion South is an area sandwiched in between Pretoria and the Midrand and it's highly regarded for so many reasons. Residents of the area enjoy a slightly more relaxed existence then their nearby neighbours. Since the inception of the world-class Gautrain service, many have chosen Centurion as their home-base. The area is deemed desirable for residential reasons because of a number of factors, which include its close proximity to various natural areas as well as leading sporting and entertainment facilities such as SuperSport park, which is one of South Africa’s most popular cricket stadiums.

A brief history of the area

Centurion has a surprisingly old history behind it and fossils have been found not far from Centurion South at the Sterkfontein Caves. Archaeologists have suggested that these fossils date back as far as 2 to 3 million years. This particular historical region was declared a World Heritage Site and  is located under 50km from the Southern or central areas of Centurion. It's also a stone’s throw away from Krugersdorp another prominent High-veld town.

These are huge historical findings, Centurion’s modern inhabitants can be dated back to a far more recent era, which is said to be somewhere around the year 1200 AD. These early African settlers were believed to be blacksmiths herdsmen and farmers. By the 1900’s the same area was ravaged by war between the Matabele and Bakwena tribes where the Matabele were declared victors. This was around 1825 and 1826.

Centurion South is closely located to the central areas of Centurion. This leading commercial, industrial and residential node is well known for its world-class infrastructure where various developments are taking place, which is set to put Centurion even further on the map. The highly regarded Gautrain service has a stop in Centurion and its geographical positioning makes it easily accessible from either Park Station in the centre of Johannesburg or from Hatfield in the centre of Pretoria.

The Southern regions of Centurion are also well connected via various roadways. Some of the prominent roads that connect various suburbs within this urban expanse include West Avenue, South Street, Lenchen Avenue, Elizabeth Street and Jean Avenue (to name but a few). If one wishes to travel to other parts of sprawling Johannesburg or Pretoria some of the preferred routes that can be utilized include Ben Schoeman Freeway, Pretoria Main Road, and Danie Joubert Freeway. All of these particular roads are well maintained which is another reason why Centurion is a highly regarded residential area.

Schools in the area

Centurion is well known for having numerous schooling facilities which also makes it a sought-after residential location. Some of the popular schools in the area include the Centurion Christian School, Village Montessori School, Spark Centurion, The Way Christian School, Sutherland High School, Centurion Montessori School, Zwartkop Christian School and Irene Primary School.

Hospitals nearby

Centurion also has no shortage of medical facilities and hospitals including Netcare Unitas Hospital, Centurion Day Hospital, Centurion Eye Hospital. Intercare Irene Sub-Acute Hospital, Mediclinic Midstream, Netcare Femina Hospital and Cure Day Clinics Midstream.

Distance from key points (Airport/CBD)

Another aspect that makes Centurion favorable is its positioning. Its located on the outskirts of Pretoria, however, is still close enough to get to the central areas of Johannesburg easily as well. This makes it the best choice if one works in Johannesburg or Pretoria but wants to live in a slightly more secluded area. If one wishes to travel to the central business district of Johannesburg via Centurion South, it will take just under an hour and is 55.3 km in distance. However the use of the Gautrain service will halve this travel time. Depending on which route is taken its believed to be around 60 km to OR Tambo International Airport and will be around 40 minutes or more to get there. Centurion is far closer to the central areas or central business district of Pretoria and if one needs to commute to this part of the location its believed to be roughly 23 km and will take just under 30 minutes and is just under 25 km. If one chooses to take the world-class Gautrain service it's will be drastically quicker and will only be 6 minutes travel time. This is why many professionals in the Centurion area are starting to take this option or seriously considering the Gautrain to help appease traffic congestion and reduce travel time and carbon footprints.

Both Centurion South and Centurion Central have a world of shopping waiting on its doorsteps. This is another reason why the location has become favourable for so many reasons. Some of the leading shops, malls and shopping centres in Centurion South include Irene Village Mall, Forest Hill City, Safari Centre 4x4 stores, Cash Converters Centurion, Reds Shopping centre, Rage Shoes South Africa, Duesouth Centurion, Supre Centurion and Crystal Direct Factory Shop.

Centurion South has no shortages of restaurants if its quick and tasty food you’re after you’re in luck. However, this doesn’t mean that the area doesn't also have a large assortment of fine dining and world cuisine. Some of the more popular eateries and restaurants in Centurion South include De Kloof Restaurant, Vita Vita Italian Restaurant, Crawdaddy’s Good Food, Rhapsody’s, Pru Leith Chefs Academy and Restaurant, O’Galito, Fishmonger Centurion, Hemingway’s Restaurant and Wine Bar and Mehak Indian Restaurant.

Special Attractions

Some of these include bird watching at Smuts House which is open to the public every day. Its believed that this is also a formidable location for those interested in rocks formations and experts have cited these formations as being some of the oldest on the planet. One can also visit Smuts House Museum in the same location. Which is dedicated to telling the story of South African historical figure Jan Smuts.  Another highly regarded location for all the bird  lovers out there, and a destination where individuals can relax and get away from the madding crowd is the Luton Valley Bird Sanctuary.
