Brackenfell at a glance

In the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town lie some well known and popular suburbs, including  Kraaifontein, which  was first established in the 1600’s as a cattle farm. Whether it was the flora or the fauna that attracted the crows is debatable, but as the name Kraaifontein means Crow Fountain, it is assumed that there were an abundance of crows in the area at the time.  Now however, the rural areas of Kraaifontein produce some of the best vegetables in the Cape. Kraaifontein has developed into a hub of residential options from apartments, security villages to large estate homes. It is close to the N1 highway, boasts numerous primary and secondary schools and offers the new Cape Gate shopping mall.  Some of the suburbs include Avalon Estate, Bonnie Brae, Kleinbron, Langeberg, Peerless Park, Scottsville, Uitzicht and Windor Park to name a few.

Brackenfell is a newer area which was established in 1913, but today is a well know suburb affectionately referred to as being, behind the ‘boerewors curtain’ due to is predominantly Afrikaans residents.  Originally the township developed around a major road crossing and today affords easy access to the N1, R300, Old Paarl and Bottelary Roads. Only 35km from Cape Town, it is also only a stones through away from an easy escape to the local wine routes and nature reserves. Brackenfell is divided into 3 areas; namely North, Central and South and boasts over 30 suburbs plus a large commercial and industrial sector.

Some of the suburbs include Vredekloof, Vredekloof East and Vredekloof Heights, Morgenster, Protea Heights, Protea Village, Sonkring. It also boats numerous education institutions, large shopping malls and sports facilities. The Vredekloof residents established the Vredekloof Safety Council (VSC) in 2006 and as part of an eight point plan to improve the area’s security and aesthetics, the Vredekloof Community Improvement District (VCID) was formed in 2009.

They make the residential area safe, clean, attractive and user-friendly by providing a range of safety services, assist the Municipality in maintaining of public open space and other residential services. This is a real bonus for all residents.
