What is Brakpan known for?

Category Area Info

Previously a mining community, Brakpan has become a thriving town with a vibrant lifestyle. Situated between Boksburg, Benoni, and Springs, the area offers plenty of property gems, first-class amenities, and attractions for the whole family. But, it has a unique character with a close-knit community. Here are some of the reasons putting Brakpan on the map.

Rich historical background

In Brakpan, you can find history on every corner. The town's name was used by the British in the 1880s in reference to a non-perennial lake that would annually dry to become a "brackish pan". It was here that Brakpan's first settlement began.

When a rich seam of coal was discovered around 1888, the town saw a surge in development which continued with the mining of gold and uranium. One of Brakpan's claims to fame was that it had the highest mine dump in the world at that time, its height being 120 metres (390 ft) above ground level.

Brakpan retains much of its historical feel through its architecture. Take a drive around town to visit notable landmarks such as the Brakpan Mines Bowling Club, one of the oldest operational bowling clubs in Gauteng.

Thriving sporting culture

Brakpan is known for its strong sporting culture. Rugby is popular thanks to the Brakpan Rugby Club and the local Bosman Stadium which is used for both football and rugby matches.
