Commute confidently: tips to arrive at work with a smile

Category Tips & Tricks

Your daily commute can feel like a chore, but it doesn't have to be that way. TomTom's latest Traffic Index shows most South Africans spend an average of 15 to 29 minutes on the road. Those precious minutes can actually become the best time of your day; an opportunity for rejuvenation, inspiration, and even a touch of excitement. We've rounded up top commuter tips to ditch the morning grumbles and put a spring in your step on your way to work.

Carpool instead of riding solo: Hitting the road with coworkers, friends, or neighbours can help you share petrol and toll costs. But, the early morning banter can be an instant booster or a chance to discuss work projects for added productivity. The daily rides can be a great way to network and build stronger relationships.

Keep your wheels in good shape: A well-maintained car is a happy car. Be sure to check your vehicle's vital signs, such as oil levels, tire pressure, brake lights, and investigate any leaks and noises. Regular maintenance will prevent any incidents on the road and ensure you get to work safe and sound.

Have a good night's sleep: If you sleep like a champion, you'll be ready to seize the day. And be more alert for an event-free journey. Whether you need to get a better bed, adjust your nighttime routine, or speak to a healthcare professional, make the investment for a better trip to work.

Pack a tasty snack pack: Mild dehydration and low blood can make you feel anxious or grumpy in morning traffic. Instead, fuel your body and you'll get through your commute like a ray of sunshine. Kill cravings with drinking yoghurt, fruit, or protein bars. And swap that short-lived caffeine rush for hydrating green tea, coconut water, or aloe juice.

Leave early, avoid rush hour: An extra time buffer can help you overcome unanticipated delays and avoid the rush of peak traffic. Planning your morning efficiently and setting an extra alarm to remind you to leave will ensure you feel calm and composed when you get to work on time.

Prepare for the weather: Mother Nature can be unpredictable, but that doesn't mean your commute has to be. For sunny weather, have your sunglasses and sunscreen on hand. For cold weather, pack a warm jacket. And for the threatening skies, be able to pull out your umbrella or raincoat at a moment's notice.

Wear comfy driving shoes: Your sleek heels and stylish dress shoes complement your attire. But, they can make driving a pain. For your commute, the AA recommends well-fitted, soft shoes with a thin sole that also has a grip. This will allow you to control pressure on the pedals while also keeping your feet happy.

Embrace the power of travel apps: Do yourself a huge favour and download these to your phone. Apps like Waze and Google Maps can keep you updated on traffic conditions, road closures, construction and even suggest alternative routes. You can also get information on police traps and speed cams, ensuring you drive carefully and cruise into work without stress.

Learn something new: Another great commuting tip is to make your travel time one for self-improvement and reflection. Dive into the world of audiobooks (try Audible), listen to a podcast (try Pocket Casts), catch up on the latest news (try Google News), or master a new language (try Duolingo).

Play your favourite music: It's not a secret that turning up the tunes can make travelling better. But studies find your choice can make a difference. Faster music aids in alertness and concentration while downtempo music can soothe your mind and relax your muscles.

Talk to yourself (we're not kidding): Having a conversation out loud with the most important person in your car can be a game-changer. It's a great thing to do while commuting: you can pump yourself up for the day with affirmations, organise your thoughts, craft a to-do list, or practise your presentation or meeting points.

Perfect your posture: Say no to slouching and you can stop a major effect of long commutes to work - muscle pains and stiffness. Sit tall, engage your core muscles, and relax your shoulders. Not only will you look and feel more confident, but you'll also promote good posture habits for a healthier and more comfortable journey.
