Montana at a glance

Situated at the embankment of the Magaliesberg Mountain range one will find Montana. A suburb located in Pretoria that is geared around feeling as if you aren’t in one of South Africa’s most regarded city’s anymore but a country escape. Far away from all the hustle and bustle the Gauteng province and Tshwane is well known for. The fact that Montana is seen to be a more recently developed area means that properties are generally bigger than other parts of Pretoria and architectural styles are deemed to be more modern. 

A brief history of the area

Although the Montana area is relatively new the Magaliesberg Mountain range is quite the opposite. Some of the earliest known humans found on the planet have a connection to this location. Archaeological findings have noted that human inhabitants in the region date back as far as 2 million years. These inhabitants are believed to have been found in the Sterkfontein Caves not far from The Magaliesberg Mountain range. If one wishes to learn more about this fascinating part of human history its advised to visit the Cradle of Humankind which is situated not from the Montana suburb and within close proximity to the actual town of Magaliesberg. 

Infrastructure

Due to the fact that Montana is a highly regarded and sought after newer residential node infrastructure is generally well-maintained and recently erected. Some of the main roads that connect Montana with the rest of Tshwane, Pretoria, and Gauteng is Jan Bantjies Road,  Klippan Street, Baccara Street, Enkeldoorn Avenue, Dr. Swanepoel Road, Juglans Crescent and Macadamia Street. 

Schools in the area

The Montana suburb and surrounding areas have no shortage of great schools and education facilities some of the more prominent ones include Little Camelot Nursery School, Hoerskool Montana, Brainline Learning World, Bosveld Spoortjes Kleuterskool, Laerskool Magalieskruin, Canny Kids Academy Nursery School, Revival Christian School, and Northridge Primary School. 

Hospitals nearby

Due to the fact that Montana is a fairly new residential area medical facilities are slim. However, there is still the Netcare Montana Hospital and Joyful Hearts Baby Clinic within its proximity. Some of the other hospitals within close proximity to Montana include Beethoven Recovery Centre, Schoemansville Medical Centre, Hartbeespoort Medical Centre, Netcare Sunninghill Hospital, Netcare Jakaranda Hospital and the Louis Pasteur Private Hospital. 

Distance from key points (Airport/CBD)

Another great reason for choosing to relocate to Montana is the fact that it's within close proximity to the central areas of Pretoria. If one wishes to get to the central business area of this regarded South African city it will take roughly 20 to 30 minutes travel time and is between 15 km to 30 km depending on which route is chosen. Although Pretoria does have an airport most of the main domestic or international flights will leave from either Lanseria Airport or the OR Tambo International Airport. If one wishes to travel from Montana to the OR Tambo International Airport it will take roughly 40 minutes travel time and is 60 km to 80 km depending on which route is chosen. If one wishes to travel to the Lanseria International Airport from Montana it's believed to take 50 minutes to an hour and is 60 km to 80 km in distance. 

Malls/Shopping

There is also an abundance of shopping in and around the Montana area some of the more established shopping facilities in the Montana vicinity include Montana Value Centre, Kolonnade Retail Park and Shopping Centre, Montana Piazza Shopping Centre, Sinoville Shopping Centre, Tshwane China Mall Shopping Centre, West End Lifestyle and Decor Centre and Zambezi Junction. This is another reason why so many are opting to move there.  

Restaurants

The Montana suburb has no shortage of great places to eat. Some of the more popular eateries and restaurants in the vicinity include The Hussar Grill, Die Plek Boerekos Restaurant, Panarottis Montana, Sahil Curry Den, Barristers Restaurant and Pub, Kung Fu Kitchen, Taste 4 Mozambique, Ocean Basket Wingtip Crossing, Burger Bistro Montana and the Black Sea Restaurant and Take Away.  

Special Attractions

Visit The Roodeplaat Dam Nature Reserve

This particular nature reserve had very humble beginnings and today is seen to be a great outing not far from various epicentres within Pretoria or Tshwane. When the reserve was first conceived it was merely an irrigation dam, however, today it's a 200 000 hectare space with various bird and wildlife including the black-backed-jackal kudus, warthogs, blue wildebeest, zebra, and impala. One can visit this iconic part of Pretoria for a picnic, sail a boat in the dam or fish. The northern part of the dam even has water sports and basic campsites. 

Sammy Marks Museum

The Sammy Marks mansion and now museum pays homage to a forgotten time. The house itself and is well restored and was first completed in 1884. At that time it was the lodgings of Sammy Marks who played a formidable role in the mining, industrial and agricultural sector of the time within the Suid-Afrikaansche Republiek. Definitely, a must-see for any history buff. Opening times are from Tuesday until Sunday from 10 am until 4 pm. 


Stop and smell the roses at Ludwig’s Rose Farm

This is a must for any flower enthusiast out there. This particular rose farm company was established in 1971. It's a particularly nice outing for the whole family as there is also a restaurant called the Spiced Coffee Restaurant which has various rose inspired and rose infused items on the menu, including rosehip marmalade and rose-petal jam. If one can’t make it to this part of Pretoria one can also visit other Ludwig Rose farms situated in Glenferness Midrand, Stellenbosch, Cape Winelands, Lynnwood Pretoria and Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal.  

Fort Klapperkop

Another noteworthy aspect of living in Montana or Pretoria for that matter is that there are plenty of reasons to find out about the fascinating history if the country and the region at large. One such piece of history is Fort Klapperkop. It's believed that this could very well be one of the best examples of 19th century arms on the planet. Legend has it that it was an inspired by German dry moats and was first built in 1986 around the time of the second-Anglo Boer war. Another outing for budding and established historians alike.
