A brief history of the area

As history reads the Waterfall area dates back to around 1851 and was then said to be a farm roughly 6000 acres in circumference which was called Langefontein. This is according to waterfallcommunity.weebly.com an online resource dedicated to the popular suburb.

“By 1900 Waterfall could boast having two stores, one run by Ada Christian (of Christians in Hillcrest fame) and the other owned by Mr. Essop Bobat and situated where the Assembly Church is on the corner of the Walk and Inanada Road. (The "new" Essop stores, built in approximately 1930 was built higher up).The Dinkelmans were responsible for getting electricity laid on in the neighbourhood, as well as commissioning the building of the Inanda Road. At one stage there were moves to have the road renamed Dinkelman Highway”. - Mrs C.B. Pieters (1990).

As this account reads the Dinkleman family had a significant role to play in the development of early Waterfall and the upper highway area and were said to be quite eccentric as well, with Vivian Dinkleman even owning a lion cub as a pet which was later donated to the Lourenco Marques (Maputo, Mozambique) museum.
