Ideally situated Edenvale continues to be a hot residential destination within many potential homeowners sights. Brief history of the area

History of the now Edenvale area dates back as far as 1903, just after the Anglo Boer War. It was established as a Gold Mine and was then named after the then Rietfontein Gold Mine. It was believed to have been turned into its own municipal area around the year 1942. The whole of the Gauteng province has been developed largely because of mining and Edenvale is no different. It is stated that a lot of the area was frequented by Cornish Mineworks, when the suburb was first being constructed.

Infrastructure

The Edenvale expanse has great infrastructure and roadways, where roads are often maintained and well kept. Some of the roads which connect the sprawling Edenvale location with the rest of Johannesburg and the Gauteng province include Harris Road, Terrace Road, Lunik Drive, Baker Road, Laurie Road (M78) Cecil Auret Road.

The Edenvale area is also popular for the fact that is has many well-known schools, some of which include Edenvale High School, Edenglen Primary School, Eastleigh Primary School, Holy Rosary School for Girls, Dunvegan Primary School, M.W De Wet Primary School, Petra Christian Preschool and Dowerglen High School. 

Hospitals nearby

The main hospital within Edenvale is, titled the Edenvale General Hospital. However, within the greater Edenvale area itself there are many other hospitals which include the Helen Joseph Hospital, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, Bedford Gardens Hospital, Bedford Gardens Hospital, Netcare Milpark Hospital, Tambo Memorial Hospital, Bertha Gxowa Hospital, and the Nelson Mandela’s Children’s Hospital. 

Distance from key points (Airport/CBD)

Edenvale is well situated to the various hubs of sprawling Johannesburg, if one wishes to travel from Edenvale to the central areas of the city its will take roughly 30 to 40 minutes depending on which route is chosen. It's said to be roughly under 20 km or just over, depending on which route one decides on as there a number of different roads and highways to choose from. Edenvale is one of the most keenly located areas in terms of its close proximity to one of Africa’s busiest airports the OR Tambo International airport. If one wishes to travel to this famous airport it will take no longer then 10 to 15 minutes travel time and is under 10 km in distance. 

Malls/Shopping

Johannesburg is widely considered to be one of the shopping epicentres of Southern Africa and Edenvale follows suit with some quality retail experiences. Some of the best malls and shopping centres in the Edenvale area include Greenstone Shopping Centre, Eden Mall, Germiston Meadowvale Mall/Vukile, Edenvale Shopping Centre, Van Riebeeck Mall, Edenvale and the Karaglen Shopping Centre. 

Restaurants

The Edenvale suburban expanse is also popular for various types of eateries, restaurants, fast food chains and fine dining establishments. Some of these places in which to eat include Malagueta, Eira Moura, De Molen, Red Door Cafe, La Tazzina, Fahrenheit Seafood and Grill, Da Graziella, La Terrazza Caffe, Grill and Deli, Nando’s Modderfontein and Panarottis Greenstone.

Bezuidenhout Park

This historically significant park is a highly regarded place to visit for so many reasons. Not just popular for getting out of the hustle and bustle of the city, it has also become popular because many like to revel in its heritage, which has put it on the map. The area was used by British soldiers around 1902. Hence a monument was built to honour those who had lost their lives in the South African war. The park was utilized by the Bezuidenhout family who are said to be some of the first immigrants to travel to South Africa. The park isn’t just famous for its historical purposes but it also has significance to those wanting to know more about permaculture as the The Siyakhana Permaculture Food Garden is also situated in the grounds of this popular park. The park is situated in Observatory Avenue, Dewetshof, not far from both Edenvale and Kensington, its open everyday and entry is free.

Gillooly's Farm

A place of sanctuary from the obvious chaos that is Johannesburg is Gillooly’s Farm, situated in the Bedfordview not far from Edenvale. The farm is famous for its various natural areas where work worn people from the big city can come and walk through nature trails forgetting that they were ever in that same industrious region yonder. It's also a bird watchers paradise and there are over 50 species of birds who have made the oasis within the city their home. Some of these species include Egyption Geese and Cape Wingtails. Another added feature is their man-made lake which features some interesting variety of fish as well. Gilloly’s Farm is situated at Boeing Road West, Bedfordview not far from Edenvale.

Hunyani Snake City

South Africa is well known for having a wide variety of snakes and reptiles and Hunyani Snake City, is dedicated to enabling one to learn everything there is to know about this fascinating, yet often deadly creature. This particular location is also known as Huyani Reptile Educational Breeding Centre and one can visit the facility to learn about cobras, anacondas, rattlesnakes, pythons, mambas and even crocodiles. This particular snake enthusiasts paradise is open 6 days a week and is located at 17 Voortrekker Ave, Edenvale.
