OUR TOWN
Hoedspruit is one of the main gateways to the Kruger National Park. It's an ideal base for a 1 day loop, going into Kruger at Orpen gate, and coming out at the Phalaborwa gate. And then, of course, there are some world famous private game reserves around Kruger Park, like Klaserie, Timbavati, Thornybush and Balule - some of which are just a short drive from Hoedspruit town.
The climate in Hoedspruit is subtropical. Average temperatures in summer are around 31 degrees Celsius, and about 26 degrees in winter, making for nice warm days almost year round. Apart from all the usual tourist traps (hot air ballooning, elephant back safaris, lion walks and the like), Hoedspruit also has a lot to offer to people who actually live here. There's the Drakensig golf course, which is part of the military base. It is run as a not-for-profit organisation, meaning that a round of golf is really cheap (as are the refreshments at the 19th hole).
There's a little airstrip right in the middle of town, which even has a flight school. So learn to fly in Hoedspruit as you will be able to fly over all the many game farms, private reserves, wildlife estates and see the bush from above.
There's a great private school in town, the Southern Cross School, which has a nature based curriculum, and has a really good reputation.
A new community centre has just opened up, run by 3 ladies (a South African, a German, and an Austrian lady), and they offer activities like yoga and taebo. There are two stables in town and for the horse crazy and one can take horse-riding lessons. For the foodies, we've got a few great restaurants in town, my personal favourites being the Safari Club, and Sleepers Restaurant (a converted railway station). For contact details, click here.
Shopaholics will love the Kamogelo Shopping Centre, with its wooden walkways and quaint thatch roofs.
The Blyde River Canyon is nearby, which is the third largest Canyon in the world, and the worlds largest “green” canyon. A trip to the Blyde Dam will be rewarded with mountain scenery, abundance of fauna and flora, water falls, and hiking trails.
Hoedspruit is the perfect location for a safari and a great location to explore the area. There are many game farms, game reserves, and lodges to stay at in the area. No matter what your interests, you won't get bored in Hoedspruit.
Many people have bought property and moved to the area since it offers such a great lifestyle. You can live on a game farm, wildlife estate or game reserve and enjoy nature on your doorstep. The people are friendly, there is a sense of community, crime is extremely low and traffic is almost unheard of. Hoedspruit does not even have a traffic light.
